Verizon Names Jorge Ivan Ramirez President of CODETEL
Ramirez to Lead Dominican Phone CompanyNews Release
October 29, 2000 –NEW YORK - Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ), the communications company formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, has named Jorge Ivan Ramirez as president of Compañia Dominicana de Teléfonos, C por A (CODETEL). CODETEL is the leading local, long-distance and wireless telephone service provider in the Dominican Republic and is owned and operated by Verizon.
Ramirez is responsible for all of the CODETEL's wireline and wireless operations, which serve 707,000 access lines, 320,000 cellular subscribers and 124,000 paging customers. Ramirez will be located at the company's headquarters in Santo Domingo.
"Ramirez brings a wealth of experience to this critical role," said Fares Salloum, Verizon International president for the Americas. "His leadership will help Verizon strengthen its position in the Dominican Republic and reinforce CODETEL's leadership in the telecommunications market."
Ramirez is a native of Medellin, Colombia, and has more than 20 years experience in the telecommunications industry. He previously was general manager of Diveo de Colombia LTDA, a telecommunications company based in Bogota, Columbia, that provides local voice and data services utilizing fixed wireless broadband. Ramirez played a significant role in the start-up of the company, including development of its Internet Protocol connectivity products and network construction.
Ramirez also held several key sales and managerial positions with AT&T Networks in Colombia and Venezuela, as well as the position of vice president, Operations, at CELUMOVIL, S.A., one of two companies awarded a joint wireless license serving Central Colombia.
Ramirez earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin. He studied financial analysis and project evaluation at Universidad de Antioquia and also studied marketing at Universidad EAFIT and Berkeley University, all in Columbia.
